Every Parent Needs Some Basic Skills

Parenting is really hard and there are some skills that, if you do not possess them naturally, you need to work hard to develop as you go. Many parents simply raise their kids the way they were raised, which does not always produce the best results. In this article we are going to look at some of the most important skills that each parent needs to have.

Everyone has heard that it’s good to praise children, but you have to be conscious on how you do this. There are some parents who do not praise their kids enough but there are just as many who do so in a non-helpful way. For instance, it is better to praise a child for making a real effort at something than it is to praise them for something that is out of their control. Praising a child for something that is inherent like intelligence, athleticism or attractiveness could be counterproductive in that it could build up some vanity and arrogance. On the other hand, offering praise to a child for working hard studying for a test or on the sports field or in their school play is helping them continue to do their best.

It’s normal for parents to feel overwhelmed, to sometimes get mad and to feel frustrated once in a while. When you start to feel this way, you need to take a break. It is better to put some resources in place so that you can ask someone else to watch your son or daughter if you need to take a breather. This can be your partner, a friend or relative or even a trusted babysitter. Ideally, you should have more than one person on your list, as not everyone will always be available. Even if you’re not at your breaking point yet, it is important to take time for yourself sometimes. Sometimes you don’t need a lot of time for this, just fifteen minutes spent walking around your block can be enough to help you feel refreshed. You’ll make a lot better parent if you take some time for yourself and do not try to be a perfect parent 100% of the time.

Every parent has a certain parenting style that comes naturally, but sometimes this should be modified, especially if you tend to go to one extreme or another. There are some parents who are very strict and authoritarian and that is a reflection of how they were raised. In today’s society, however, kids need to be able to think for themselves and when you are too strict, the kids either become far too obedient and docile or they become rebellious early on. Of course, when you are too permissive, your kids won’t have any real sense of boundaries and will likely grow up to be very undisciplined adults.

Studies show that kids thrive the most in an environment run with “authoritative parenting” which is partly authoritarian and partly permissive.

These are some of the parenting skills that can help you build a successful relationship with your kids. Every parent has areas that are challenging, and this will vary based on the personality of your child as well as your own. Try to remember that parenting is a process that changes a little bit each day as your child grows up but keeping some definite boundaries in place can be helpful both for you and your child.
